Antiseptic and aseptic prophylaxis for burns: use of silver nitrate and of isolators.

چکیده
Local applications of neomycin, chlorhexidine, and polymyxin have been shown in controlled trials to protect burns against colonization by various pathogens, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus (Cason and Lowbury, 1960; Lowbury, Miller, Cason, and Jackson, 1962b) ; earlier studies had shown the effectiveness of polymyxin cream in prophylaxis against Ps. aeruginosa (Jackson, Lowbury, and Topley, 1951). Though clinically useful, these prophylactic effects were limited, especially in the more extensive burns, and the emergence of neomycin-resistant Staph. aureus reduced their value (Lowbury, Babb, Brown, and Collins, 1964). The search for more effective methods was therefore continued. Silver nitrate was formerly used on burns to accelerate the formation of dry slough (Bettman, 1936 ; Kalt, 1851). Recently Moyer, Brentano, Gravens, Margraf, and Monafo (1965) reported very successful results of treatment for extensive burns by application of compresses soaked in 0.5% silver nitrate solution ; the method was claimed to prevent infection by various pathogens, including Ps. aeruginosa, which is widely recognized as a primary cause of death in extensively burned patients. In the same year Lindberg, Moncrief, Switzer, Order, and Mills (1965) reported a comparable control of wound sepsis by the local application of a cream containing 10% p-aminomethylbenzene sulphonamide (Sulfamylon). Another approach in the control of infection has been the

Comparison of Albizia Julibressin and Silver Sulfadiazine in Healing of Second and Third Degree Burns
BACKGROUND Large numbers of population suffer from burn annually. The promising treatment of burn has not been identified yet. Albizia julibressin (A. julibressin) in Fabaceae family is popular for its antiseptic activity. This prospective study was designed to compare the wound healing effects of A. julibressin gel (AG) with silver sulfadiazine (SSD). METHODS This single blind clinical tria...
متن کاملClinical Significance of Credé's Prophylaxis in Germany at Present
The introduction of silver nitrate for prophylaxis of gonococcal ophthalmia neonatorum is one of the milestones of preventive medicine. However, in our time an increasing necessity to review Credé's prophylaxis from both a human rights and a medical standpoint is required. The chairmen of the obstetrics and gynecology departments of the German university hospitals were questioned to learn about...
متن کاملIn vitro Susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Isolated from a Burn Center to Silver Sulfadiazine and Silver Nitrate in Shiraz, South of Iran
Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as an etiological agent, has a prominent infection role in serious burned patients. Burned patients usually treated with antiseptic ointments such as silver sulfadiazine (SSD). This study evaluated the effectiveness of 1% SSD and different concentrations of silver nitrate solution (SNS) on resistant isolates of P. aeruginosa. Methods: Three groups of P. aerug...

ABSTRACT Background and Objective: Hospital clothing and textiles have a great role in providing medical services to patients. Hospital services would not be possible without using these textiles. The aim of this study was to prepare non-woven polyester for use in medical textiles. Methods:...
متن کاملColloidal Silver (CS) as an Antiseptic: Two opposing viewpoints
CS preparations for topical and/or oral use were subsequently developed to overcome the astringency of, and staining by, simple silver salts[2] while retaining the long-known antiseptic properties of metallic silver.[3] The older preparations, pre-1910, usually contained high levels of oxidized silver (Ag+), not precipitated by isotonic salt solutions, made from silver nitrate and various carri...
